The Language of Music: My Pink Floyd Coming Back to Life Experience

The language of music has a way of communicating realities that words alone fail to convey. I discovered this recently in a song by Pink Floyd, “Coming Back to Life.”

The only Pink Floyd album I’ve owned, I bought in the 90s. It was The Division Bell album. Yesterday evening it was dark out, and I was driving home and turned on a song from The Division Bell called “Coming Back to Life.”

Several elements of “Coming Back to Life” quickly brought me into a calm and meditative state of mind. First, the guitar solos. These solos are vibrant and add something complex when combined with other elements of the song. Second, the lyrics convey going through a challenge, but transitioning into hope. The lyrics “For killing the past and coming back to life” communicate this message. Life is full of challenges, and it’s helpful to remember that with pain comes opportunity. Third, the mysterious and hypnotic voice of David Gilmour deepens the meditative quality of the song.

Whether listening to music alone or with other people, music has a way of bringing us back to the present moment. There’s a power in music that can touch the heart and mind in ways that mere words fall short. Listening to “Coming Back to Life” helped add an extra dose of life to my life.

How has music influenced your life?
